Holiday Pet Sitting in Lancaster County: Why Your Pet Deserves a Sitter
Holidays are crazy in Lancaster County. Family gatherings, Hersheypark events, visiting relatives and then there's the question: what do we do with the pets?
Boarding kennels fill up fast around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Plus, boarding's stressful for pets used to their own home. More families are realizing that in home pet sitting during holidays is just better.
Why Pet Sitting Beats Boarding for the Holidays
Your Pet Stays Home
Pets are creatures of habit. The holidays already bring changes decorations, visitors, different schedules. Adding a boarding facility on top of that creates real anxiety. At home, your pet stays in familiar surroundings, their own bed, their own bowl. That matters.
One on One Attention
Boarding facilities have dozens of animals. Your pet's one of many. With in home sitting, they get individual attention during each visit. No competing with other animals for space or food.
No Illness Exposure
Kennels can be breeding grounds for kennel cough and other contagious stuff. Your pet at home doesn't deal with that.
Cats and Exotic Pets Especially Benefit
Most cats hate boarding. They hide, stop eating, act stressed. In home cat sitting keeps them comfortable. Same goes for birds and reptiles.
Holiday Pet Sitting Checklist
Plan ahead so your pet has a smooth experience:
- Book early: Holiday dates fill up fast. Reserve at least 2 3 weeks ahead for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
- Schedule a meet and greet: Introduce your pet to the sitter before you leave, just like you'd do for regular pet sitting.
- Pet proof your home: Tinsel, ornaments, and poinsettias can hurt pets. Make it safe before you go.
- Stock up on supplies: Extra food, treats, medications cover your whole trip plus a buffer.
- Get emergency vet info: Some offices have reduced holiday hours. Make sure your sitter knows where to go.
Holiday Travel Logistics
Think about bringing your pet along versus hiring a sitter. Holiday traffic on 283 and the Turnpike doubles travel times. Most pet friendly hotels are full and expensive. Large family gatherings can overwhelm even calm dogs.
For most families in South Central PA, leaving your pet home with a sitter is less stressful for everyone.
