Cat Sitting 101: Keeping Your Cat Happy While You're Away
Cats get a reputation for not needing much, but that's actually wrong. They do need care and attention they're just picky about it. I've sat with shy cats, social lap cats, and everything in between. The difference is always in understanding what makes that particular cat comfortable.
Why Your Cat Needs Someone To Check In
Here's the thing people get wrong: you can't just leave a cat with extra food and water for a few days. Cats can develop serious problems if nobody's watching blocked urinary tracts, stress related eating issues, getting into dangerous situations. A daily visit means I catch problems early.
Unlike boarding, your cat stays home. That's huge. Cats hate change. Staying in their own space with a sitter is way less stressful than a boarding facility.
Keep Your Cat's Routine Steady
Feeding Times Matter
If your cat eats at 7 AM and 6 PM, those times stay the same. Same food, same amount, same bowls. Your cat's clock is set don't mess with it.
A Clean Litter Box Is Essential
Cats won't use a dirty box. They'll pee elsewhere if I don't keep it clean. I scoop daily and change the litter when needed. Non negotiable.
Play Matters Even for Lazy Cats
Even your sleeping cat needs interactive play. A feather wand or laser pointer for 10 15 minutes during each visit keeps them mentally stimulated and stops them from getting stressed.
Make Home Comfortable for Them
Don't Change Things Before You Leave
Don't rearrange furniture or put away their favorite spots. Cats find comfort in familiar surroundings. Changes stress them out.
Let Them Have Their Safe Spaces
If your cat loves hiding under the bed or on top of the bookshelf, make sure those spots stay accessible. When they're nervous, they need to retreat.
Temperature Matters
Cats like it warm around 70 80 degrees. Make sure they can get to sunny windows. They'll find those spots naturally.
How to Know If Your Cat's Stressed
When I visit, I watch for these signs:
- Hiding more than usual
- Changes in eating or drinking
- Over grooming or stopped grooming
- Avoiding the litter box
- Quieter or louder than normal
- Acting aggressive or strange
If Your Cat's Shy or Anxious
Some cats need extra time. Here's what I do:
- Move slowly, speak softly
- Let them come to me, not the other way around
- Use treats to build positive associations
- Just exist in the same room without forcing interaction
- Leave something with your scent around
Multiple Cats in One Home
Each cat needs individual attention. I feed them separately if needed, keep multiple litter boxes (one per cat plus one extra), give each one playtime, and watch how they're getting along while you're away.
Tell Me Everything
During our meet and greet, share details about your cat:
- Their personality shy, outgoing, playful, cuddly
- What toys actually get them excited
- Where they hide when nervous
- Any health stuff or medications
- Foods they like and hate
- How they usually react to strangers
