How to Prepare Your Pet for a Pet Sitter Visit
Leaving your pet with a sitter for the first time can feel nerve wracking. But here's the thing with a little prep work, both you and your pet will feel a lot more comfortable. I've done this with hundreds of pet owners, and the ones who prepare ahead always have the best results.
Whether you've got a dog, cat, or something else, here's what I've learned actually works.
The Meet and Greet Is Non Negotiable
Let Your Pet Meet Their Sitter First
This is the single most important step. Your pet should meet me (or any sitter) while you're still there no surprises on the day you leave. It takes the stress out of it. Most professional pet sitters, including me, offer free consultations for exactly this reason. Your pet gets comfortable, you get to ask all your questions, and I get to learn what makes your animal tick.
Keep It Low Key
Don't make a big deal out of it. Just introduce us like we're a neighbor stopping by. Your pet will pick up on your energy if you're relaxed, they're relaxed.
Write Down Your Pet's Routine
I can't stress this enough. Pets are creatures of habit. Create a simple document that covers:
- Feeding times and how much food
- Where the dog likes to walk or how often
- Medication times and how to give it
- Bedtime routine
- Favorite toys and what actually gets them excited
- Quirks I should know about (scared of thunder, doesn't like strangers, etc.)
This document is gold. It tells me exactly how to keep your pet's day normal while you're gone.
Stock Up on Supplies
Make sure you've got enough food, treats, and meds for your whole trip plus extra. Leave it somewhere obvious don't hide it in the back of the cabinet. Show me where everything is during the meet and greet, and label it clearly if you've got multiple pets.
Leave Your Pet Comfortable
Leave Something That Smells Like You
This one's simple but works like magic. An unwashed t shirt or blanket with your smell on it can calm a nervous pet down. I've seen it make a real difference.
Keep the Home Normal
Don't move furniture around or put away your dog's favorite spot on the couch before you leave. Consistency is your friend here. If your cat usually lounges on the windowsill, keep that spot open and accessible.
Soft Background Noise Helps Some Pets
If your dog's used to having the TV or radio on, let me know. Some pets settle better with a little ambient noise in the background.
Emergency Info Don't Skip This
Your Vet's Information
Leave your vet's phone number, address, and after hours emergency number. If something goes wrong, I need to know where to go and that your vet knows I'm authorized to bring your pet in. Give them a call ahead of time and make sure they're okay with that.
A Local Emergency Contact
Give me your cell, but also leave a local friend or family member's number who can make decisions if I can't reach you. It's just good planning.
What to Expect When You Leave
Most pets act a little different those first couple days. They might eat less or seem quieter. That's normal. Most animals adjust really quick, especially with a sitter who's keeping them on schedule.
I'll send you photos and updates so you can see your pet's actually doing fine. Communication matters you'll know exactly what's happening while you're away.
When You Come Home
Expect a happy reunion! Keep it calm at first though overwhelming them with excitement can actually cause accidents or upset stomachs. Just ease back into your normal routine and your pet will settle right back in.
