Best Dog Walking Trails in Elizabethtown PA

Living in Elizabethtown means you've got some really great outdoor space for you and your dog. I walk these trails nearly every day as a professional dog walker, and I've got some favorites I'd like to share.

Whether your dog needs a quick neighborhood loop or you want to get out for a longer hike, here's what I actually use with clients.

Elizabethtown Community Park

This is the main spot for local dog owners. The paved paths are solid, loop through open fields and shade. It's flat and works for any dog even older dogs who need gentler exercise.

Weekday afternoons are quieter than weekend mornings. If your dog's reactive or prefers a calm walk, afternoon's your time.

Conoy Canal Trail

This trail follows an old canal towpath near Bainbridge along the Susquehanna River. It's shaded, mostly flat, and packed gravel. Dogs love sniffing by the water. Stays pretty quiet too, which is nice if your dog needs space.

Chickies Rock County Park

Located near Columbia, Chickies Rock has more challenging terrain with wooded trails and amazing river overlook views. This is for dogs with real stamina and good feet. The trails get rocky and steep in sections. Definitely keep your dog leashed those cliffs are real.

Lancaster Junction Recreation Trail

This rail trail runs from Landisville toward Salunga on a flat crushed stone surface. Goes through farmland and woods, so there's plenty of interesting smells. You'll share it with cyclists, so keep your dog on a short leash in busy areas.

Northwest Lancaster County River Trail

Beautiful paved trail with river views, starting in Falmouth and running along the Susquehanna. Smooth walking surface, nice river breezes. Gets busy with walkers and runners, so leash control matters.

Mount Gretna Nature Trail

A short drive from Elizabethtown, the Governor Dick area has miles of woodland trails. Shaded even in summer, varying elevation gives active dogs a real workout. Great for weekend adventures.

What You Actually Need for Trail Walks

  • Water: Central PA summers are hot. Bring a collapsible bowl.
  • Check for ticks: Lancaster County's tick territory from spring through fall. Check your dog thoroughly afterward.
  • Pick up after them: Bring bags. It's the law and keeps trails open.
  • Know your dog's limits: Not every dog needs a 5 mile hike. If you're seeing signs your dog needs more exercise, start gradually and build up distance.
  • Leash requirement: Even well trained dogs can get spooked by wildlife. Keep them leashed.

When Work Gets In the Way

Your schedule gets crazy, weather's bad, or you just don't have time for a full walk. Professional dog walking keeps your dog active and happy even when you're slammed. I walk dogs every day across the Elizabethtown area.
