Lancaster County PA is a wonderful place for dog owners. With its rolling farmland, scenic creeks, and well-maintained parks, there are plenty of spots to explore with your four-legged companion. As a professional dog walker serving Lancaster, Lititz, Mount Joy, and communities across the county, I've walked hundreds of miles on these trails. Here are my top picks for dog-friendly parks and walking spots.

Best Dog Parks in Lancaster County

Long's Park, Lancaster

Long's Park is a 70-acre gem in the heart of Lancaster city. The paved paths loop around a beautiful lake, making it perfect for dogs of all energy levels. There's ample shade, water fountains, and plenty of green space for your dog to enjoy. The park also hosts community events throughout the year, though dogs should be leashed during festivals.

Best for: All dogs. Paved paths are great for senior dogs or those with mobility issues.

Buchanan Park, Lancaster

Located on the north side of Lancaster, Buchanan Park offers open fields, wooded walking paths, and a community atmosphere. It's a popular spot for morning and evening dog walks. The varied terrain gives dogs both physical exercise and mental stimulation.

Best for: Medium to high-energy dogs who enjoy exploring different terrains.

Lancaster County Central Park, Lancaster

Central Park spans over 544 acres and is the crown jewel of Lancaster County's park system. The park features the Millport Conservancy trails, a swimming pool complex, gardens, and miles of walking paths along Mill Creek. Dogs on leash are welcome throughout the park. The Environmental Center offers educational nature walks too.

Best for: Dogs who love long walks. You can easily spend 1-2 hours here exploring different trail loops.

Best Walking Trails for Dogs

Northwest Lancaster County River Trail

This paved trail runs along the Susquehanna River from Columbia toward Marietta and beyond. It's flat, well-maintained, and offers stunning river views. Dogs love the variety of smells along the waterway, and there's plenty of wildlife to observe. The trail connects to other paths, so you can customize your walk length.

Best for: All dogs. The flat, paved surface is excellent for senior dogs, and the length accommodates high-energy breeds.

Chickies Rock County Park, Columbia/Marietta

Just a short drive from Marietta and Columbia, Chickies Rock offers challenging hiking trails with incredible overlook views of the Susquehanna River. The trails range from moderate to strenuous. Dogs must be on leash, and some trails have steep, rocky sections. bring water for both of you.

Best for: Athletic, sure-footed dogs who enjoy hiking. Not recommended for puppies or senior dogs.

Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area

Located between Lititz and Ephrata, Middle Creek offers over 5,000 acres of fields, forests, and wetlands. Dogs are allowed on leash during certain seasons (check PA Game Commission rules). The trails wind through diverse habitats, and in late winter, thousands of snow geese stop here during migration, a spectacular sight.

Best for: Nature-loving dogs who enjoy varied terrain. Check seasonal restrictions before visiting.

Conewago Recreation Trail

This rail trail runs from Elizabethtown toward the Lebanon County border. The flat, crushed limestone surface is easy on paws. It passes through farmland and wooded areas, offering a peaceful walk away from traffic. It's one of our favorite spots for daily dog walking clients.

Best for: All dogs. The quiet, flat trail is perfect for dogs who get overstimulated by busy parks.
